L.Zastre – 50 Plus

This is an advertisement for an art show by Lani Zastre. The title of the show, at the top of the poster in bold font reads: “50 PLUS.” Front and centre is a graphite drawing of an elderly heterosexual couple, in tones of grey. The two are depicted in bed, with blankets drawn up to their nude chests, clasping each other and laughing intimately, nose-to-nose. The man is bald, save some lower fringe; the woman’s hair is white. Show information is presented in shades of grey-blue text, reading: “A solo art show by Lani Zastre, inspired by the photography of Arianne Clement. Opening September 9, 2022, 6-9pm. 102-329 Cumberland Ave, Winnipeg, and aanm.ca/online-exhibitions.” Along the side of the image are logos for Canada Council for the Arts and Arts AccessAbility Network Manitoba.
This is a self-portrait of artist Lani Zastre, done in ink and watercolour. Lani wears a drab green parka with a fur hood. The hood is pulled up over a red knit hat and the parka collar is done up tightly, hiding the lower third of her face, so that all we see of Lani are her steel grey eyes and a long braid of brown hair poking out from the hood.

STATEMENT
Over the years I have used art as a way of tolerating distressing situations, feelings and thoughts. My practice has included creating art daily. Art has given me inspiration and helped me embrace a life that is full of stories outside the lines. I love drawing people in moments of vulnerability and strength. I love giving people the opportunity to see themselves in art. I love that my artistic practice is evolving to include connecting with my community in new and different ways.
