Creative Accessibility: Creative Freedom with Milli Flaig Hooper

June 18, 2022 @ 12:00 pm 1:00 pm

This is a photo of Milli. Millie is a young white woman with blonde hair. She is smiling slightly and looking off in the distance. She is wearing glasses, a bright pink t-shirt and a name tag with her name against a bright yellow background.

It is in the unspoken word that Milli Flaig Hooper designs exquisite paper creations which speak volumes. The gentle sensibility she coaxes out of recycled paper presents the viewer with the opportunity to sink into her tactile world like a soft pillow might receive a weary head. Milli expresses her creativity through a collaborative process.

Milli discovered this art process in 2007 when she experimented with handmade paper. So many sheets of recycled paper have been produced, then used to create award-winning art, and many other products – cards, magnets, bookmarks, and ornaments. Her involvement with the WAVE Artists’ Studio Tour began in 2009 in a shared gallery. The following year Milli went solo with her own studio and has been involved ever since.

The love of paper making has grown in technique and diversity. Milli has incorporated other interests in her art with puzzles and fibre. She has been recognized for her unique work with awards in the Interlake Juried Art Shows, and the Jane Cameron Award (for Canadian artists with Down syndrome).
