Diane Driedger will discuss how people with chronic illnesses are in the very fabric of our societies. She will provide a historical overview of visual artists with chronic illness, such as Renoir, Matisse, Monet, Kahlo who adapted the way they worked to create their art. She will discuss how Florence Nightingale and Charles Darwin wrote books from their beds in the 1800s when “invalids” had a role in society. Diane will share experiences of adapting her environment to continue creating after she acquired chronic illness. In addition, she will suggest how arts organizations can create access for artists and audience members with chronic illnesses.
