The North Point Douglas Women’s Centre is a resource centre in the Point Douglas neighbourhood located at 221 Austin St N. that sees the empowerment of women as essential for the development of a safe vibrant, and healthy community. In particular, the centre aims to address all forms of violence against women through prevention and remediation strategies. The centre is both a drop-in space, which provides resources such as phones, computers, refreshments, clothing donations, emergency food-kits, feminine hygiene products, diapers, and printing/copying/faxing, as well a facility that supports various evening programs, such as Mama Bear Clan, Women’s Warrior Circle, and a men’s group. Counselling is available through the centre and in addition to this the staff are available to the community to assist with concerns to do with issues such as housing, food, emotional-well being, and job searches. The NPDWC has a well-developed Peer Support program, which functions according to the premise that community health is best achieved through mutual support and advocacy. NPDWC envisions a Point Douglas where women can live full, engaging lives, and can empower one another as they connect with their identities and goals, as family and community members.
