About the lecture

In conjunction with our exhibition Yearning for Comfort, Not Cure, Gallery 1C03 is pleased to partner with the Disability Studies Program and the Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies at The University of Winnipeg to present a lecture by scholar and artist Dr. Diane Driedger.

For her lecture Claiming ‘The Masters’ for Disability Rights: An Artist’s Journey, Driedger will trace the careers of Master artists who had disabilities, such as Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo and Maud Lewis. Driedger has inserted herself into their paintings as a sign of solidarity. She will present these images and discuss how these artists have informed her practice as an artist with disability.
About Diane Driedger

Diane Driedger is a visual artist, poet and educator. Her book, Red with Living: Poems and Art, was published by Inanna in 2016. She is Assistant Professor in the Interdisciplinary Master’s program in Disability Studies at the University of Manitoba.
