Russell Arches Artwork Call for Submissions: Public Art Opportunity
Russell Manitoba is revitalizing its downtown, including replacing its iconic arches. The new arches, connecting four corners of four intersections downtown, are an opportunity to include public artwork that tells the story of our community. The artwork will be combined with digital media about the art and the story behind it. The artwork will be cut into aluminum plates attached to the arches and backlit at night.
Themes to be addressed in the artwork range from cultural diversity, agriculture, community history, innovators and local heroes, and tourism and natural surroundings. Artists should choose one theme per panel and can make multiple submissions. The artwork will be cut into 10 foot tall aluminum plates that will be attached to the lower portion of the arches. Each leg of the arch will include two panels, for a total of 32 panels. In addition to the artwork, there will be digital media where visitors can find out more about the artist and the theme, using videos, photography, graphics or short stories. The panels and online storytelling elements will create an open-air museum that provides a testament to the area’s past, present and future.
Please see the attached PDF to find out how to participate in this public art opportunity. Submission deadline is December 1, 2018. The unveiling of the artwork and digital media is planned for the summer of 2019.
